Yard Dogs: Equipment to Keep Trailers on the Move

A notes that yard trucks “...seem to be a perfect application for an electric powertrain….” It goes on to say: "To get around the hassles and expense associated with Tier 4 engines, some yard tractor manufacturers went to gasoline engines, but those lacked the torque to get the job done. So, the operator’s choices were limited to an old diesel yard tractor with its associated maintenance and repair headaches, or a new tractor, with the emissions-related challenges. Enter the electric yard tractor." Orange EV's 100% electric yard trucks do the same work as diesels but with zero emissions, no Tier 4 costs or downtime, and reduced operating costs. Fleets utilizing electric yard trucks are saving up to 90% net in fuel, an estimated 95% on brake maintenance, and 100% on engine and transmission-related powertrain maintenance. Chautauqua County Deploys Orange EV Electric Yard Truck

KANSAS CITY, MO and MAYVILLE, NY, December 6, 2017 - The Orange EV electric terminal truck, also known as a yard jockey, spotter, or yard truck, was purchased at a discount enabled by New York State’s voucher incentive program. “We were looking to implement a cost-effective Clean Fleets project as part of the .” Mike Saxton, Orange EV’s Chief Commercial Officer, said, “Single-shift waste transfer operations are best supported by Orange EV’s Standard Duty T-Series with standard onboard charging, powered by a single 240-volt circuit readily available at most industrial sites.” In New York State, fleets have been purchasing Orange EV’s pure-electric terminal trucks for about the cost of a new diesel. From the first day of operation these fleets have been saving up to 90% on fuel and reducing maintenance and repair costs, while realizing a range of health and safety benefits. “It’s been exciting and rewarding to work with Chautauqua on this project,” said Saxton. “It’s taken only a few months from concept though evaluation, decision, and deployment and they’ve become the nation’s first county government to deploy 100% electric, Class 8 trucks.” Chautauqua’s new electric yard truck, which is shuttling trailers at the North County Transfer Station, is expected to work through a full shift on a single charge. “The Orange EV truck is much than the old diesel truck and will create a better, healthier environment for employees and the surrounding community,” said George Spanos, Chautauqua County Public Facilities Director. “We are already planning to order a second Orange EV yard truck in January 2018 to be deployed at the South County Transfer Station.” Covering 1,065 square miles, is the westernmost county in the state of New York. County operations serve 2 cities, 27 towns, and 15 villages, and in November 2017, Chautauqua County received a New York State Regional Impact Award for implementing local projects with significant regional impact. Replacing a 15+ year old diesel truck with 100% electric completely eliminates yard truck emissions and diesel fuel consumption while advancing efforts to meet the energy, environmental, and economic goals established in the Chautauqua County 20/20 Comprehensive Plan. With this deployment, Chautauqua County became the nation’s first county government to introduce 100% electric, Class 8 trucks into fleet operations." } }

DHL Highlights Experience with Orange EV Electric Trucks in TMC Panel Presentation

DHL Supply Chain, along with Orange EV, Workhorse Commercial Trucks, and Ryder System, recently gave a panel presentation at the Technology & Maintenance Council's (TMC's) Fall Meeting. The panelists presented potential challenges facing EV owners, addressed implementation, and shared their experiences with electric vehicles. outlines DHL Supply Chain's experience with Orange EV's 100% electric yard trucks: Dave Williams, operations director for DHL Supply Chain, outlined his experiences using two all-electric yard tractors during evaluation testing, noting that his trucks are in operation approximately 21 hours a day. “We have had no issues with the operation of our electric trucks at all,” he added. Williams said one pleasant surprise at the beginning of DHL’s electric truck initiative was the grant process to secure government subsidies. “When we sought grant money to test CNG-powered trucks, the application process was complicated and lengthy,” he said. “Getting getting EV grant money application process together much easier. In fact, it took less than a week.” Williams said driver training was a key component in putting the electric trucks in service, but added that that overall the operation of the trucks is “very straightforward” with few unfamiliar procedures. “For us, training was more about overcoming the ‘fear factor’ drivers had with the new vehicles,” he said. “The bulk of the training focused on understanding charge-state indicators as well as vehicle recharging features.” DHL Supply Chain’s electric truck evaluation is still ongoing. But Williams said he was confident that a “conservative" estimate has the two electric yard tractors saving $40,584 per year compared to diesel units. "All in all, this has been an extremely positive experience for us,” he added. . { "@context": "", "@type": "ImageObject", "contentUrl": "", "url": "", "contentlocation": "US", "name": "TMC Panel Article", "description": "TMC Panel Educates Fleets on Real-World Electruc Truck Operation Article", "provider": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Orange EV", "url": "", "image": "" } } { "@context": "", "@type": "UserReview", "Description": "Dave Williams, operations director for DHL Supply Chain, outlined his experiences using two all-electric yard tractors during evaluation testing", "reviewbody": "Dave Williams, operations director for DHL Supply Chain, outlined his experiences using two all-electric yard tractors during evaluation testing, noting that his trucks are in operation approximately 21 hours a day. Health Risk Assessment for Diesel Exhaust

The report "" (March 2016) from Health Canada "...is a comprehensive review and analysis of the potential adverse health effects associated with diesel fuel use in Canada. The report focuses on diesel exhaust (DE) emissions from on-road and off-road vehicles (excluding rail and marine applications) and targets impacts resulting from general population exposures." Among other findings, the report concludes: Other determinations in the report include likely/suggestive relationships between DE exposure and cardiovascular, immunological, reproductive and developmental, and central nervous system effects. The report notes key uncertainties and gaps, but "Overall, it is concluded that DE is associated with significant population health impacts in Canada, and efforts should continue to further reduce emissions of and human exposures to DE." . { "@context": "", "@type": "ImageObject", "contentUrl": "", "name": "Health Risk Assessment for Diesel Exhaust", "description": "Health Risk Assessment for Diesel Exhaust, from Health Canada, March 2016", "provider": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Orange EV", "url": "", "image": "" } } { "@context": "", "@type": "WebPage", "mainEntityOfPage": { "@type": "WebPage", "@id": "" }, "headline": "Health Risk Assessment for Diesel Exhaust Finds Significant Health Impacts", "image": [ ], "datePublished": "2018-08-14T14:58:23+00:00", "author": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Orange EV" }, "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Orange EV", "logo": { "@type": "ImageObject", "url": "" } }, "description": "The report “Human Health Risk Assessment for Diesel Exhaust” (March 2016) from Health Canada “…is a comprehensive review and analysis of the potential adverse health effects associated with diesel fuel use in Canada. California Ports Approve Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) Update

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach unanimously approved the 2017 Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) Update which “provides high-level guidance for accelerating progress toward a zero-emission future”.  Particularly relevant to Orange EV: Beginning in 2020, terminal operators must purchase the cleanest equipment available when procuring new cargo-handling equipment (zero emission, if feasible).
