Wegmans Shows Why Yard Operations Are a Natural Fit for Electric

For fleets evaluating where electrification makes the most operational and financial sense, the yard continues to stand out.

In a recent MotorWeek feature, Wegmans shared how it is using alternative fuels and electric vehicles across its transportation operations, including battery-electric yard trucks that move trailers around its distribution centers day and night.

With 114 stores and three distribution centers processing approximately 2,600 trailer loads each week, Wegmans operates a demanding logistics network where reliability and operating costs matter.

The company’s experience demonstrates why terminal trucks can be an ideal place to begin electrification.

Finding the Right Application for Electric

Rather than trying to electrify every vehicle in its fleet, Wegmans evaluated where electric technology could perform the same work as the equipment it was replacing.

That evaluation led the company to battery-electric box trucks and 17 electric yard tractors used to move trailers on and off loading docks.

As Wegmans’ Matt Harris explained in the MotorWeek segment, yard trucks operate much like large material-handling equipment. Their predictable routes, defined operating environment and return-to-base duty cycles make them particularly well suited for electric power.

For Wegmans, the results have gone beyond reducing emissions.

MotorWeek reports that the company’s electric yard trucks have helped reduce maintenance costs by 80% compared with diesel, while also improving air quality for warehouse employees and drivers.

Electrification That Works for the Operation

Wegmans’ experience reinforces an important point for fleets considering electrification: the technology should fit the application.

Terminal trucks spend their working lives moving trailers within distribution centers, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, ports and other defined environments. Electrifying that work can provide operational and economic benefits without requiring fleets to fundamentally change the job the vehicle performs.

For Wegmans, electric yard trucks have become part of a broader strategy focused on choosing the right technology for each transportation application.
